  • Lethargy + breathing difficulty
  • Lethargy + temperature > 40°C or < 37°C

Common causes

  • Infections (viral, bacterial, parasitic)
  • Pain (hidden fracture, abdominal pain, dental pain)

EMERGENCY SIGNS — call the vet immediately

  • Lethargy + vomiting or diarrhoea

  • Lethargy + temperature above 40°C (heatstroke) or below 37°C (hypothermia)
  • Lethargy + collapse or imbalance

How to assess at home

Check rectal temperature (normal 38-39°C). Touch the gums — should be pink and moist. Press gently — colour should return in under 2 seconds. Check skin tent (dehydration). Note appetite, water intake, urination and stools over the past 24-48h.

At the vet — what to expect

Full clinical exam, blood tests (CBC, biochemistry), possibly abdominal ultrasound or chest X-ray. For senior dogs, annual screening even without symptoms catches kidney, heart or liver issues early.

Post-vaccine lethargy

Normal reaction in the first 24-48h post-vaccine: mild drowsiness, decreased appetite, local soreness. If it lasts beyond 48h, or fever, vomiting, diarrhoea or facial swelling appear — call the vet.

Frequently asked questions

My dog sleeps a lot — is it normal?

Adult dogs sleep 12-14h/day, puppies and seniors even more. If active when awake and eating normally, probably OK. Lethargy means apathy even when awake, disinterest in stimuli.

In summer my dog is lazy — is it heatstroke?

Possible. Heatstroke is an emergency: temp > 40°C, excessive panting, drooling, deep red gums. Move to cool place, wet towel on abdomen, get vet help immediately.

Senior dog (10+) is less active — is it normal?

Activity decreases with age, but sudden decline is not normal. Schedule a senior vet exam with blood tests — many senior dog conditions are treatable if caught early.

After vaccine the dog slept a lot — should I worry?

No, normal for 24-48h. If longer or new symptoms appear (vomiting, fever, swelling), call the vet.
