What to expect from a pet shop in Romania

Pet shops in Romania typically stock dry and wet food across major brands, treats, litter, bedding, basic accessories (collars, leads, harnesses, carriers), aquarium and terrarium supplies, small animal cages, grooming basics and a selection of toys. Larger stores may also carry live ornamental fish, small mammals, reptiles and birds; specialty shops focus on a single species — for example aquarium-only outlets or reptile breeders.

Prescription pet meds vs. over-the-counter

Pet shops can sell over-the-counter products: external parasite collars, food supplements, ear-cleaning solutions, mild dermatology shampoos, dental chews, food enzymes and so on. Anything classed as a veterinary medicine (most antibiotics, prescription anti-parasitics for severe infestations, dermatological preparations beyond shampoos, injectables, sedatives) is dispensed only with a prescription, and you'll need to go to a veterinary pharmacy or buy them at the prescribing vet's clinic. If you're not sure which category a product belongs to, ask the pet shop staff or your vet before driving across town.

Picking the right food

Food is the single most consequential purchase a pet shop sells you. Match the formula to your pet's species (cats are obligate carnivores — never feed them dog food long-term), life stage (puppy/kitten, adult, senior), size category for dogs, and any medical condition the vet has flagged (renal, hypoallergenic, weight management, urinary). Switch foods gradually over 7–10 days to avoid digestive upset. Unit price per kilo is rarely the right measure — calorie density and ingredient quality matter more, and a higher-quality food usually means smaller portions.

Asking for help

Look for staff with hands-on animal experience — many shops employ keepers who breed or keep the animals they sell, and they'll be honest about what works. For first-time owners, a good shop will spend time on basic husbandry (cage size, temperature, humidity, diet, socialisation) rather than just up-selling. Some larger stores include in-store grooming salons or vet consultation rooms; check ahead if you need to book. Phone before driving out for a specific item — listings here come from OpenStreetMap and stock changes day to day.
